چکیده

Cloud top heights as derived using measurements of two instruments (GOME and ATSR-2) onboard the ESA ERS-2 space platform are intercompared. It was found that cloud altitudes obtained using thermal IR measurements of ATSR-2 highly correlate with those obtained from top-of-atmosphere backscattered solar light measurements of GOME in O2 A-band using both the semi-analytical cloud retrieval algorithm SACURA and the neural network cloud retrieval algorithm ROCINN. The average cloud top heights as obtained by these diverse techniques for the whole data set analyzed (931 GOME pixels) differ by 0.6km on average, with larger values given by SACURA as applied to GOME data. We found that the standard deviation of SACURA-derived results for cloud top heights from those of ATSR-2 is equal to 1.8km, while the standard deviation of ROCINN-derived results is equal to 2.2km. The respective average deviations are 0.6km (SACURA) and −0.5km (ROCINN). © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A fast method for retrieval of cloud parameters using oxygen A band measurements from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment

The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board the ERS-2 isdesigned to measure trace gas column densities in the Earth's atmosphere. Such retrievals are hindered by the presence of clouds. The most important cloud parameters that are needed to correct trace gas column density retrievals for the disturbing effects of clouds are the (effective) cloud fraction and cloud top pressure. At pr...

Tropospheric Oh Primary Production from Ers-2 Data

In order to calculate the OH primary production rate from satellite measurements, one has to estimate the following quantities: profile of the photodissociation rate of ozone to O(D), tropospheric ozone profile and tropospheric water vapour profile. The estimation of tropospheric OH primary production rate from ERS-2 data is demonstrated. The tropospheric ozone profiles retrieved at the Rutherf...

ATSR Total Water Vapour Content Retrieval and Comparison with GOME and ATSR Microwave Sounder Data

The Water Vapour estimation from satellite data has been widely discussed in past years and different IR based techniques have been approached by various authors. In our work we estimate the total content of water vapour over sea surface by using ATSR-2 (Along Track Scanning Radiometer) Infra Red imagery. Two different retrieval methods have been applied: one proposed by Ottlé [1] in 1997 and t...

A System for Monitoring No2 Emissions from Biomass Burning by Using Gome and Atsr-2 Data

In this paper, we propose a system for monitoring abnormal NO2 emissions in troposphere by using remote-sensing sensors. In particular, the system aims at estimating the amount of NO2 resulting from biomass burning by exploiting the synergies between the GOME and the ATSR-2 sensors mounted on board of the ERS-2 satellite. Two different approaches to the estimation of NO2 are proposed: the forme...

Comparison of Operational Cloud Properties Derived from Gome/ers-2 and Msg/seviri Data

We focus on the retrieval of cloud properties appropriate for trace gas retrieval from sun-normalized UV/VIS backscatter spectra obtained from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on-board ERS-2. A data fusion technique is applied to calculate the fractional cloud cover of GOME footprints from GOME’s Polarization Measurement Devices (PMDs). Furthermore, cloudtop albedo and cloud-top he...
